COVID-19 is only one among a long list of infectious disease outbreaks in history, and it definitely won’t be the last if humanity does not immediately change course by addressing the root causes behind them. It is a type of warning typically issued by health experts, scientists or activists, one might assume. But this time the voice comes from animals, the very animals suspected to have spread such pathogens to humans, and the many others that had to suffer from its consequences.

Animals cannot talk, which is why a selected group of artists have volunteered to talk on their behalf, as they believe artists possess the capacity of empathizing and ‘becoming the other’. Almost thirty writers, poets, musicians, and activists gathered in front of Sejong Arts Center, on Gwanghwamun square, Seoul on August 20th, Thursday to read out the respective messages each animals had to offer humanity. Co-organized by the creative collective ‘Edongshi’ and the Biodiversity Foundation, participants read out the words of the animal they chose to represent while donning a mask depicting the animal. Among the species ‘present’ were bat, pangolin, wild boa r, chicken, pig, civet cat, badger, moon bear, snake, camel, duck, reindeer, cow, humpback whale, chimpanzee, porcupine etc. The Extinction Manifesto was also drawn up from the collective voice of the animals and recited. After expressing their last ‘will’ to humanity, each animal collapsed, died and exited the scene, culminating in a powerful and stunning portrayal of extinction.

If a masquerade of animal-impersonating artists sounds unusual, there was yet another twist added to the event. Due to the recent spike in coronavirus cases in Seoul, all kinds of public gatherings pose a significant risk to public health and are best avoided. To accommodate this situation, all the artists were asked to arrive at a pre-determined time slot to have their recitals independently, and the footage/image was later superimposed on one another to create a virtual gathering of animals. By doing so, the setting suggests a novel non-contact model of social demonstration suitable in the post-COVID-19 era.

<My Amphibian Dream> was published this spring and Jane Goodall has sent a blurb!

“An absolutely crazy, wonderful, delightful book. Frogs and newts and their engaging relatives will swim and crawl into the minds and hearts of everyone – children and adults alike – who turns the pages. <My Amphibian Dream> is timely too, as all over the world these marvelous animals are endangered and they need all the help and understanding we can give them.”
